Crossroads, Where Faith and Culture Meet

Introduction.

By way of introduction, and in case you are not familiar with our weekly programs, they all address the ongoing tensions in our culture between the Bible based values and beliefs of our Christian faith and the secular beliefs and practices of others who do not believe in God or in the teaching of His Word – and who are openly hostile to both.  That was clearly evident in our program last week that featured “Kingdoms in Conflict”. 

By way of further background, other programs have also addressed the sexual revolution that is taking place in our culture today in several different ways.  That includes pornography which, like cancer, can leave a trail of ruined men, exploited women, broken marriages and families, and damaged children.  It is not an innocent pastime.  Rather it is addictive and destructive to everyone involved.

The Sexual Revolution on Sexual Orientation and Identity. 

However, today’s program focuses on a more recent challenge to traditional sexual understandings and practices involving sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).  It can lead to confusion in which some people question their own gender and want to change to the opposite sex as a “transgender”. 

As a result, they sometimes look for ways to do that, either through puberty blockers or even surgery, both of which can be irreversible in the event they want to change their minds as they grow older.

In addition, it leads to confusion and chaos in various arenas, particularly in our schools, in our laws, and even in some of our churches.  So what can we do to restore morality and order to our culture?

That is the setting for our program this weekend which features Rita and her special guest, Matt Sharp, who is the Special Counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, a non-profit organization that stands on the front lines for protecting life, faith, freedom, and family in our culture.  Matt serves as the director of legislative affairs who advises leaders on the importance of protecting leaders and families on these issues in the public affairs arena.

Matt also addresses the question of what we can do to help defend against attacks on our faith and freedoms.  He emphasizes that churches must be involved in this battle, just as he defended local parents in their lawsuit against the Harrisonburg School Board on the issue of parental rights in the education of their children.  Where can we obtain guidance on developing model legislation and local policies?
