The Church at the Crossroads

Thank you so much for your many encouraging responses to the inaugural edition of Crossroads which aired last Sunday on five Valley radio stations.

In this Sunday’s program, we will take a closer look at what the Crossroads between Faith and Culture look like for the VA General Assembly that will convene next Wednesday, Jan. 14.

We will begin with the role of the church in “politics”, whether in our local communities, in Richmond, or in Washington?  Isn’t it supposed to stay out of politics and just focus on evangelism?

Many people believe it should, but what does the Bible say?  Did Biblical leaders get involved in “politics” or did they just stand aside and let the kings do as they pleased?  What about Moses?  Or Nathan?  Or John the Baptist?

For that matter, what did early American churches do – especially in the lead-up to our war for independence?  What was the Black-Robed Regiment?  Who was John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg?  And should the role of the churches today be any different from what it was then?  (We will address the topic of “Separation of Church and State” in a later program.)

The VA General Assembly at the Crossroads

That brings us back to the Virginia General Assembly.  To begin with, what are some of the priority “Values” bills that we would like to see the Assembly pass this year?  And are there also some that we would like to see defeated?

Also, how do Democrats and Republicans generally score on these bills, such as those which promote and protect the sanctity of life, natural marriage, religious liberty, and quality education and school choice? And what about our own Valley legislators?  Who are they, and how do they score on these core issues?

Finally, what can we do to encourage them and other legislators in their fight for these “values” bills while the GA is in session through to the end of February?
