“Regrettably, however, the US Government is not inclined to limit its own power and thus needs outside help to do so. As one former VA legislator put it, ‘There’s no such thing as a self-butchering hog.’ Fortunately, however, a Convention of States, or COS, can provide such outside help, if needed.”
“To do so, Article V of the U.S. Constitution allows the states to call a Convention of States that can propose constitutional amendments that would limit federal power and jurisdiction, and it could also impose fiscal restraints on the federal government. Thankfully, such amendments can put big government back in its constitutional box and restore power to the states and to the people.”
“Article VI of the Constitution also states that all treaties made under the authority of the US shall be the Supreme Law of the land.” Thus, we need to be very careful what treaties we approve with foreign bodies such as the UN.

Background: Our Crossroads program this weekend features host Rita Peters and Special Guest Mike Farris, who together will tackle a new challenge to American sovereignty, independence, and authority, as well as a challenge to our own personal freedoms. Both Rita and Farris are constitutional experts, and Farris has exceptionally broad experience in international affairs. This can not only help resolve legal conflicts in America itself but also between America and other nations, including in the form of treaties such as the one we are facing today with the UN.
Mike Farris: Rita reviews why Farris is so well qualified to take on this new international law challenge to America. He is well known in the Valley through his experience as the founding president of the Home School Legal Defense Association and of Patrick Henry College. He has also served as lead counsel in the US Supreme Court and other federal circuit courts, cofounder of Convention of States Action, and also as President, CEO, and General Counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which is one of the world’s premier authorities for the protection of unborn human life, human rights, parental rights and the family, home school advocacy, and religious freedom for all Americans.
A New Challenge: To be clear, our new challenge to American sovereignty today comes in the form of a proposed World Health Organization Pandemic Preparedness Treaty that threatens and even overrides American authority in determining US policies, regulations, and laws on how to respond to various national and international crises that can include health pandemic breakouts, such as COVID, in the land. In effect, under the UN Treaty, it becomes a superior authority over the US and its member states which, in Farris’s words, is consistent with an underlying UN “ambition to rule the world”.
Unfortunately, the Biden administration supports this dangerous WHO Treaty, which it refers to euphemistically as an “executive agreement” and which regrettably is supported by all three branches of our government. And that’s the problem.
If approved, this Treaty would override all national and local laws that do not coincide with their UN policies, even though that would then be in violation of our own Constitution and of our Supreme Court provisions, with or without the required Senate approval.
Our Response: So what is the remedy for resolving this new UN World Health Agency threat to our national sovereignty and individual freedoms? How can we resist its efforts to force the US and other nations to comply with its demands for how to respond to local health needs and other challenges? So once again, how can we best respond to this growing conflict?
A Proposed Remedy, the Convention of States: Both Rita and Farris, joined by other leaders of the Convention of States, point to the COS as one of the best ways to respond to this threat. For example, the COS and ADF have already joined other like-minded groups in opposing our US government’s past efforts to close churches during the COVID crisis, contrary to the first amendment guaranties for freedom of religion and speech. In response to Rita’s question how our founding fathers would react to our current leaders if they approve this treaty, Farris states very bluntly that our founding fathers would shake our government leaders by their shirt collars if they do not fight to defeat this proposed UN “Treaty”.
As noted above, the COS aims in general at limiting the growing power and jurisdiction of government in various ways and seeks to return powers to the states and to individuals, as our founding fathers envisioned under Article V of the Constitution. On top of all this, Rita asks how this should affect people of faith, and both she and Mark agree that we should always look to God as our ultimate authority, not to civil bureaucrats in the UN who have no respect for our religious beliefs. Therefore, we cannot tolerate any civil demands — including from the UN — that would challenge God’s authority or violate His laws. That would certainly include any UN mandated medical responses to COVID-like pandemics or other viruses that sweep the nation.
